Research on Flora

Research on mangrove flora is crucial for advancing scientific knowledge, conserving and regular adaptive management of plantations, and addressing urgent environmental and social challenges facing plantation mangrove ecosystems and coastal communities. This research encompasses several key objectives. Research on the monitoring of mangrove flora consists of the survival and growth of Rhizophora mucronata seedlings, which investigates the viability of Rhizophora mucronata seedlings planted in the northwestern and eastern parts of Sri Lanka. Thirteen sampling sites on the North Western Coast and twenty-six locations on the Eastern Coast have been selected for long-term monitoring. This involves monitoring their survival rates, growth patterns, and ecological interactions within the mangrove plantations. Growth monitoring in Puttalam and Mundal lagoon- based mangrove plantations  has been conducted on three occasions, while monitoring studies  have been initiated on the eastern coast. The monitoring data analysis of Puttalam and Mundal mangrove areas provides a strong foundation for tracking the progress of the growth and survival of mangrove seedlings and directing effective management actions to promote their long-term survival and ecological benefits in these important coastal ecosystems.

Further research has been initiated on the determination of the rate of carbon sequestration in the biomass of mangrove seedlings planted in 1 to 2 years. The data will provide perceptions into the carbon sequestration potential of mangrove afforestation and reforestation efforts and the effectiveness of seedling planting initiatives in mitigating climate change. In addition, it is aimed at quantifying the rate of carbon sequestration in mangrove soils, which aims to assess the role of mangrove reforestation in enhancing soil carbon storage and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.

Further, the study aims to understand the long-term carbon sequestration potential of mature mangrove forests and the mangrove soil carbon storage in maintaining carbon sinks.
